Product Description
Rain Bird PTC1 Spray Head Pull-Up Tool for Pop-Up Sprinklers. Finally a tool that simplifies and speeds-up maintenance of pop-up lawn sprinklers! Easy to use tool pulls pop-up sprinkler stem upwards and prevents it from retracting while you work on maintenance or replacement of spray nozzles. Ever noticed how difficult it is to change or install nozzles, and how easily a wet stem can quickly disappear back into the spray body? Once the stem accidentally slips and retracts back into the sprinkler body, you have no option but to completely disassemble the spray head to reattach the nozzle. That frustrating and time-consuming exercise is completely eliminated with this handy tool. Easy to use instructions: (1) insert flanged flat metal tips into nozzle assembly, squeeze handles and lift to pull stem up and out of sprinkler body (2) now hold stem by hand, and squeeze handles to open jaws (3) position jaws around stem (4) release handles and tool firmly holds stem in a fully extended position. You’re now free to work with both hands without worry of stem retracting back into spray body. Tool is adjustable for width of opening by simply tightening or loosening screw on handle by hand. Works with all brands of pop-up irrigation sprinklers. Corrosion-resistant metal with comfortable vinyl handle covering. IMPORTANT: Not intended for use with geared rotors. Tool designed for use with small stem pop-up sprinklers; won’t open wide enough and spring isn’t strong enough to hold up large stem geared rotors. Rain Bird “The Intelligent Use of Water”

What a clever little tool. This pulls the spray heads up, and holds them up, without even turning on the water. The little barbs move outward as you squeeze, and basically hook under a lip on the spray head. Once you get a grip on it, you pull up until you can get your hand around it.
If your spray head came off, and the tube retracted completely into the housing, you can still use this tool to pull it up. Just stick the nose down into the tube, squeeze, and slowly pull it up. The pliers work on any brand of pop-up sprinklers, not just Rain Bird.
Once it’s up, you put them around the popped up shaft, and it keeps it from retracting. I’m not quite sure what the adjustment screw is for, but I presume just so you don’t squeeze too much and break the spring. There’s no mention of it in the directions (which is annoying to me).
If your system is on, and you spot a head that needs attention, you can just clamp this around that one so it doesn’t retract when you shut them off. Better yet, buy a few pairs so you can keep multiple heads popped up for servicing.
The construction is good, except that the pivot pin in the middle is a hollow rivet. Clearly, that’s the weakest link. The rest of it is sturdy enough… the stamped metal is more than 3 mm thick, and the rubber handle covers are nice.
The screwdriver -
The screwdriver adjustment tool is smaller than I imagined. I took pictures and listed the measurements. The handle feels like very cheap plastic, and I don’t think it would hold up to much torque. Likewise, the screwdriver blade is very thin, so I wouldn’t use this for an actual screwdriver. But it’s super handy to get geared rotors pulled up and adjusted.
Buying these saved me a ton of money over hiring a sprinkler guy, and I’m very happy.
Hope this helps.
